Frequently asked questions

The Science
How does infrared light harm organic goods?
Infrared light, also known as heat radiation, is a form of light energy with wavelengths longer than those of visible light. It is therefore invisible to the human eye, but humans can experience infrared radiation as heat. All objects in the universe emit some level of infrared radiation, but two of the most obvious sources are the sun and fire.

Organic goods exposed to infrared heat radiation degrade rapidly as vital organic compounds and terpenes are very sensitive to heat damage. Glass jars actually act like a greenhouse and can trap these infrared rays inside. This causes the inside of the jar to be hotter than the outside, speeding up the degradation process.
How can Alchemy Jars protect against infrared radiation?
Alchemy Jars uses Vacuum Insulation Technology to effectively stop heat transfer and provide your contents with a cool environment to preserve your flavor and potency. The greenhouse effect can explain why glass jars actually speed up the effects of degradation through light and heat exposure.
How does temperature affect organic goods?
A scientific report published in the world's top plant science journal, Frontiers in Plant Science, found that temperature plays a significant role in the degradation of organic compounds.

They reported that storing organic compounds at room temperature (77°F) led to a decrease of 50% in potency content over the course of 1 year, making it the most unfavorable temperature when compared with refrigerator (39°F) and freezer temperatures (-4°F).

Terpenoid content, however, was also found to decrease by over 50% at freezer temperatures (-4°F), the largest terpene decrease out of any temperature condition. With these findings they were able to conclude that the most optimal postharvest temperature conditions for organic compound and terpene preservation is at refrigerator temperatures (39°F).
How can Alchemy Jars protect against harmful heat exposure?
Alchemy Jars Vacuum Insulation Technology can keep your contents under room temperature all day after being stored in the fridge for just a few hours. No more constantly having to take your jar in and out of the fridge just to prevent degradation.

Our Vacuum Insulation Technology also prevents all condensation from forming inside and outside the jar, so you never have to worry about your contents getting water contamination when storing it in the fridge.
How does air exposure and oxidation damage cannabis and concentrates?
Air exposure enables harmful atmospheric oxidation of cannabinoids and terpenes to take place. Scientists at the Swedish National Forensic Centre concluded that the method used for organic goods storage has a very strong effect on organic compound composition. They reported with a 99% confidence level that organic compounds stored at -4°F in a dark freezer with no air exposure for 4 years showed zero degradation.

In contrast though, storing the concentrate samples with air and light exposure at room temperature decreased the potency content by 74%. That means 1 gram of organic goods could actually only be as potent as 0.25 of a gram that was preserved properly.

Storage under ambient light and temperature, but protected from air exposure and oxidation, still showed a loss of 42%. However, lead scientist, Dr. Karin Grafström points out that the analytical samples were "taken from the interior of the slabs, where light might be less intense due to self-absorption of the sample". This means that the degradation numbers could actually be even worse on the surface layers due to more intense light exposure. These numbers show air exposure alone can still account for a 32% decrease in potency and flavor.
How can Alchemy Jars protect against air exposure and oxidation?
Alchemy Jars uses a silicone gasket to make sure you have a guaranteed airtight seal every time you twist the lid closed. You can always trust that your contents are protected from the damaging effects of air exposure and oxidation.
How does ultraviolet light damage organic goods?
Ultraviolet light (UV) is a spectrum of light shorter in wavelength than those of visible light, so it is invisible to the human eye, but anyone who has experienced a sunburn has felt its effects before. The largest amount of damage from light exposure comes from UV light radiation. UV light is categorized into three subtypes: UV-A, UV-B, and UV-C, all of which differ in wavelength. UV-C radiation is the most damaging, but fortunately is absorbed by the earth's atmosphere before it can reach us. UV-A and UV-B radiation, however, are still able to cause damage. They're most notably responsible for causing sunburns and wrinkles on human skin tissue.

Cannabinoids are also susceptible to this type of damage, as UV-A and UV-B radiation has been shown to be harmful to all organic compounds, damaging DNA, proteins, lipids and membranes.
How does visible light affect organic goods?
Visible light is the portion of the electromagnetic spectrum that is visible to the human eye. It is mainly responsible for our ability to see things and is typically harmless. For plants, the visible light spectrum is primarily used in the process of photosynthesis, where plants are able to capture the light energy and use it to convert water, carbon dioxide, and minerals into oxygen and rich organic compounds.
What causes degradation?
The standard glass and plastic jars used to store organic goods do not protect against environmental factors such as light, heat, air and humidity, all of which play a huge role in degradation. Its effects are most obvious with organic goods as degradation and decay greatly affect appearance, flavor and potency. Alchemy Jars has designed the world's first and only jar to help consumers protect and preserve organic goods against degradation and decay.
What does Alchemy Jars do?
Alchemy Jars has designed the world's first and only jar to help consumers protect and preserve organic goods against degradation and decay. Clear glass jars enable degradation through light and heat exposure. UV glass jars do not protect against UV and infrared radiation.
How does light exposure harm organic goods?
Organic matter is perishable and therefore subject to decay and degradation. According to scientific studies, exposure to light (not direct sunlight) has shown to be the single greatest factor in loss of flavor and potency.

The most popular material currently used to protect and preserve organic goods is ultraviolet glass, which is advertised to block "harmful" visible light while allowing in the "good" rays of infrared and ultraviolet light. This however is a false statement, as infrared and ultraviolet rays are actually the most damaging parts of the electromagnetic spectrum.
How does Alchemy Jars preserve organic goods and terpenes?
Alchemy Jars protect organic goods and terpenes from harmful degradation caused by light, heat and air exposure.
How do I remove the glass insert?
To remove the glass insert, please use latex gloves to grab onto the inside of the glass jar and slide it out. When stored in cold temperatures, the silicone insert may grab tightly onto the glass. If you can not remove it by grabbing it, please apply a bit of hot water between the glass and the insert.
Can Alchemy Jars be stored in the fridge?
Yes, Alchemy Jars can be stored in the fridge and can stay cold for over 24 hours.
Will there be more sizes available in the future?
We are currently developing larger sizes of Alchemy Jars collections. Please sign up for our email list to stay updated with new sizes and styles.
What do I do if the silicone seal gets stuck to the glass?
Due to cold storage and a strong seal, the silicone seal may sometimes get stuck to the glass insert when taking the lid off. Do not worry if this happens, this does not affect the function of the air tight seal, it actually is demonstrating that it is working very well. The silicone seal is designed to come out of the lid for easy cleaning, if it does come out, simply place it back inside the lid with the flat side facing outward.
